Do You Own Your Domain Name?

You need to own your domain name. We can’t stress this enough. This is your asset, and you need to control it. This means that your practice should be listed as the "registrant" of your domain name. To find out if you own your domain name, visit www.godaddy.com and click "WHOIS search" at the bottom of the page. Enter your domain name, and it will tell you who owns it (called "registrant"). If you’re not listed as the registrant, contact your current provider and ask them to switch it into your name. If you’re having trouble getting your domain put into your name, here are some suggestions.

  1. Resort to legal action if you can prove that the domain name belongs to your business and that you paid a website vendor to maintain it for you. Visit www.icann.com.
  2. Look up when your domain name is expiring, and submit a backorder to buy it when it becomes "free" again.
  3. Buy a new domain name for your business.
