Celebrate Pets in May: Veterinary Social Media Ideas for the Month

A cat with a butterfly on its nose.

The showers are bringing the flowers, and the month of May is officially on the horizon. Now is the time to start planning your social media calendar for the month to take advantage of the many pet holidays that happen during May.

May Is for the Pets

The month of May happens to be National Pet Month with an additional National Pet Week and Be Kind to Animals Week happening the first week of the month. May 20 is also National Rescue Dog Day. What does this mean for your social marketing planning? Well, there are a myriad of opportunities to celebrate the special pets all throughout the month. Here are some fun ideas that can increase your engagement (and help you please the algorithm) in May:

  • Highlight the pets of the staff with a photo series during National Pet Week.
  • Create a couple of posts with ideas on how your followers can be kind to animals (the ones in their lives and the ones in their community).
  • Ask for permission to take photos of your clients who came from animal shelters and create a photo collage in honor of National Rescue Dog Day.
  • Create some videos of some of the less serious visits (like nail trims) so your followers can get a behind-the-scenes look at how your team cares for the pets they love.

The Season of Caring for Pets

May is National Foster Care Month, Chip Your Pet Month, and Pet Cancer Awareness Month. Additionally, May 9 is National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day,  which means it is a great time to create some content focused on caring for pets that can keep your social profiles fresh. Think about doing one (or all) of the following:

  • Write a couple of blogs about pet cancer, ways to prevent it, and how it is treated.
  • Make a graphic reminding your followers about the importance of microchipping a pet (think about including some statistics to make the point more effective).
  • Create some posts about caring for foster pets–you never know, these posts might encourage more people in your area to start fostering pets!
  • Make a series of graphics that share some tips on preparing a plan for your pets if a disaster should ever arise.

Pet Days of May

May has a collection of days focused on every aspect of pet ownership. Here are a few of the holidays that will make the perfect fodder for your social media content:

  • May 1: National Purebred Dog Day
  • May 3: National Specially-Abled Pets Day
  • May 5: Cinco de Meow Day
  • May 9 (2nd Sat): National Dog Mom Day
  • May 14: International Chihuahua Appreciation Day
  • May 20: National Rescue Dog Day
  • May 23: World Turtle Day
  • May 31: World Parrot Day

Incorporating some of all of these holidays into your content plan will give you plenty of inspiration for fun and engaging posts.
