5 Tips for Getting Your Veterinary Practice Started on TikTok

In order to attract certain kinds of clients to your practice, you have to meet them where they are. If you are trying to get a younger demographic of pet parents through your doors, turn to TikTok. As a social media platform that attracts younger audiences, TikTok also gives you a fun and dynamic way to connect and engage with a whole new audience that could become new clients. But where do you start? Our easy-to-follow tips will help you create memorable TikToks in no time.

Know Your Audience

The most important starting point for any form of marketing is to know your audience. Since TikTok has such a young demographic (almost half of its U.S. users range in age from 10-29), you want to focus on content creation that is targeting first-time pet owners. This means short videos with tips on caring for your first pet, basic veterinary care timelines, and pet milestones to expect. Think about what younger pet owners need to know, and create content that meets that need.

Show Who You Are

Social media is a great marketing tool because it allows users to really get to know who you are as a practice. Instead of being a faceless entity, you can add a human element to your veterinary hospital. The basis of the TikTok platform is about authenticity and entertainment. Take advantage of this by showing off unique aspects of your veterinary practice. Whether you give some behind-the-scenes glimpses into the daily runnings of a vet office or create cute videos of your pet patients (with permission, of course), this is a great way to show the world who you are. Creating a relationship with potential clients—even if it’s a virtual one—will make you a memorable player in the field.

Share Your Knowledge

TikTok is a great platform through which to share educational content that can still be interesting and engaging. Consider making short, informative videos about topics like:

  • Common pet health issues
  • Seasonal care tips
  • Basic animal training
  • Toxic foods and plants
  • Pet holiday safety

Adding popular songs or eye-catching visuals can help make your videos stand out. Before you know it, your veterinary practice will have a reputation as a thought leader in the industry.

Encourage Engagement

When it comes to TikTok, the more engagement you get, the more reach your videos will have. Luckily, there is plenty of content to create that literally asks users to engage. You can host a quick Q&A session, make new videos based off of user comments, or create challenges that encourage users to participate. Consider asking followers to share videos of their pets doing tricks or wearing clothes with a clever hashtag you create (#petsinpants would be a fun and cute example).

Work with Established Pet Influencers

Social media makes the world a much smaller place, which means it’s easier to find and interact with people who are already established as influencers in the pet space. Spend some time browsing your own TikTok to find a few pet influencers whose values and message align with those of your practice. Once you find them, send them a message! It might just be the start of a beautiful digital friendship. Collaborations like these give you instant access to accounts with larger amounts of followers, which can drastically increase your reach and improve your chances of getting new clients.
