Google’s New Helpful Content Update: What You Need to Know
While Google rolls out hundreds of minor tweaks to its algorithm each year, occasionally they release a major update to the platform that impacts nearly all websites across the internet. Website owners should take particular notice of these major updates, especially since they often require changes to website behavior. As of Thursday, August 18th, 2022, Google has released a new major update called “Google’s Helpful Content Update,” and it’s packed full of important details for website owners regarding the content on their website. Our Beyond Indigo Pets team of certified Google experts is here to help explain Google’s Helpful Content Update, and share tips on how to improve and maintain your website’s SEO ranking under the new algorithm.
What You Need to Know
Whether you realize it or not, Google is constantly making multiple minor updates. Many of these updates happen daily, and most website owners have no idea anything has changed. This latest update is focused entirely on your website content, with an emphasis on the user experience. The important thing to know is that Google is looking for websites to display in search results with high-quality, satisfying content. Google is not looking for content that is written solely to catch the attention of search engines, but written with a “people-first” approach in mind. Google says:
“We continually update Search to make sure we’re helping you find high quality content…we’ll launch “helpful content update” to tackle content that seems to have been primarily created for ranking well in search engines rather than to help or inform people. This ranking update will help make sure that unoriginal, low quality content doesn’t rank highly in Search, and our testing has found it will especially improve results related to online education, as well as arts and entertainment, shopping and tech-related content.”
How Does Your Website Content Hold Up?
To see if your website is up-to-standard for this new update, first look at the existing content across your site. Your website content should be completely original and unique, and not found in any other place on the internet. Duplicate content, or content that is found elsewhere on the web without giving credit to the original source through a canonical link, will not rank well in search results, and may even result in a penalty from Google to your website.
While it may seem like an impossible task to write another completely unique article about puppy and kitten care, it can definitely be done by personalizing the content of your website to your business specifically. If you’re unsure if your website suffers from duplicate content, you can use tools such as Siteliner to check your site’s performance with unique content. Simply enter your website domain, and run the test. It will let you know how much content on the site is unique, and how much is duplicate. A small amount of duplicate content is okay, but the majority should be unique.
While unique content as a general requirement on your website isn’t new, this update is still important as it focuses on the efficacy and impact of the unique content for your website visitors. You can find some additional guidance and suggestions from Google from 2011 that are still referenced today here.
